IN CASE OF EMERGENCY, ALWAYS DIAL 911 FIRST
IN CASE OF EMERGENCY, ALWAYS DIAL 911 FIRST
The Gaylordsville Volunteer Fire Department was created by neighbors who saw a need and stepped forward to protect the community they called home. Before GVFD was formed, Gaylordsville had few fires, but when they happened, the distance from New Milford often meant devastating losses. After a chimney fire at the historic Hall house, the community knew it was time to build a fire department of its own.
After World War II, that idea became a reality. A meeting was held at the Grange Hall, where about 50 local men signed on to serve. They had no equipment, no firehouse, and no funding, just determination, community pride, and a commitment to helping their neighbors.
GVFD’s first fire truck was purchased from Bay Shore, Long Island, for just $240. Soon after, members traveled to Schenectady through a raging snowstorm to bring home a surplus Chevrolet fire truck. Those first trucks were stored wherever space could be found, first in Williamson’s barn, then in a borrowed garage heated by a stove.
What the department lacked in resources, members made up for
with hard work, persistence, a passion for protecting their community, and a shared belief in what they were building.
As support for the new department grew, plans began for a firehouse. Clarence Evans donated the land, and volunteers built the original 30 x 40 foot firehouse by hand. The first meetings were held between the trucks, with members sitting on planks balanced on cement blocks. Over time, the building was finished, expanded, and improved, growing along with the community it served.
What began as a small volunteer effort has grown into a department equipped to serve Gaylordsville and the surrounding area.

Since 1946, the Gaylordsville Volunteer Fire Department has grown with the community, but one thing has never changed: GVFD is still powered by volunteers. Today, our members respond to emergencies, support rescue operations, protect lives and property, assist at community events, and continue the legacy started by the neighbors who built this department from the ground up.
You do not need experience to make a difference. GVFD provides training, support, and opportunities for members with different skills and backgrounds. Whether you want to respond to calls, support operations, help with events, or serve behind the scenes, there is a place for you.
